I guess he has expressed interest in the role, but I think he'd be crazy to do it. Right now, he has good name recognition and he's getting credit for his acting skills. And TVD doesn't carry the stigma that Twilight does and 50 Shades will. So right now, he has great flexibility in terms of roles - he can play an action hero or star in a gritty crime thriller without having guys grumble about him sucking. And he's a talented enough actor to win an audition.

If he takes 50 Shades, he'll certainly add to his female fandom. But the movie is going to be destroyed by critics (because the books are awful), so his performance won't get any respect. I mean, let's face it, the books are basically Wild Orchid on the set of Twilight. And there will undoubtedly be a big backlash against the "mommy porn" films among guys, which will likely limit the roles he'll be offered.

I think he'd be better off doing indie films in his time away from TVD to build his resume and his acting credentials, and then trying for something with a broader fanbase, like James Bond.
