An Indian man who makes films EXCLUSIVELY starring white people
That's always seemed so odd to me. He only writes white characters. Even with Airbender, he cast an all white cast. But FAR beyond that film... It's very fascinating to me.
A quick search shows that M Night was born in India (and immediately moved to America) and was raised Hindu. But in America as a kid he attended a private catholic school. Know what his first film was about? A white catholic schoolboy. He has never made a film about people of his own ethnicity. And considering he's nearly 50 years old and has been directing for two decades, I doubt he ever will. As a minority, the first thought that came to me... can he even relate to Indian people? Even his name has been white washed. He uses only his first initial which obscures his very ethnic first name and added "Night" to his pseudonym, leaving only his last name as any trace of having Indian origin.
It's clear that he's accustomed to a mostly white point of view. He won't make films starring people of his own ethnicity, he won't even make films of characters with the same religion as him... yet he'll make a film about white Catholics. It feels like he's suppressed his own identity to fit in. So I was most surprised to learn that he is, in fact, married to an Indian woman. I definitely expected him to have a white wife.
