There is a bit of a resemblance, now that you mention it---mainly in the eyes,though.

I went for an hour mentally trying to figure out wbo he looks like. It was driving me INSANE!! His eye area is a bit like the now older Giovanni Ribisi. A young Mark Ruffalo did come to mind, as did a "Mystic Pizza" era Vincent D'Onofrio. Finally after looking at the images of him where I felt the resemblance to someone I couldn't yet pinpoint was the strongest (see next paragraph), I came away with Sam Rockwell, especially around the "moon" era where he starts out clean shaven and short hair. Hard to find a pic of Sam where he's looking clean cut, natural relaxed face and not staring down a camera, but there are a couple among his IMDb images and professional portfolio photos.

There is another post on the message boards suggesting he looks like Ant and Dec's lovechild of sorts, with a link to offer photographic proof. The photo of Andrew Scott on that link is spot on for Sam Rockwell IMO. It is what finally helped me pinpoint Sam Rockwell.

Now that I've put my brain to rest about who he looks like, I can watch Sherlock and actually keep my mind on the show!
