It appears that he has had cheek implants. I am only going by observation and have not heard anyone else make such speculations; it just really looks to me like he has had some kind of surgical alterations. It looks to me like more than just normal aging. I could be way off, though. Can anyone provide a bit of insight on this?

He has always had high, pronounced cheekbones.
As others have said: aging and current body fat might make his cheekbones look more or less pronounced. I just found this picture of him and he's very young and he has the same cheekbones:
