Sabu fan
Sabu, a uniquely endearing and charismatic star of the 1940s, appears in two of my all-time top ten films - The Thief of Bagdad and Black Narcissus. While no great actor, he has an amiable charm that I find utterly irresistible. He had an interesting life. Born in India the son of an elephant mahout, he was discovered by film-maker Robert Flaherty who cast him in the title role of his 1937 film _Elephant Boy_ (which I have yet to see). For a few years he was a major star, albeit mostly in B-movies other than a few major films (Alexander Korda's enjoyable technicolor _Jungle Book_ as well as those I have already mentioned).
He became an American citizen, served as a gunner in the US air force but his post-war career, other than a significant supporting role in the aforementioned _Black Narcissus_, tailed off. He later took part in a circus elephant act before making a minor comeback in a few minor movies of the 1960s.
Sabu died of a heart attack at age 39. According to his Wikipedia entry: _'His wife said in a television interview that two days before his death, during a routine medical check, his doctor told him: "If all my patients were as healthy as you, I would be out of a job".'_
Does anyone have any favourite Sabu movies? I am particularly interested in hearing from those of you who may have seen some of his less well-known films.
