As a gigantic Superman fan the film was a huge letdown, but it had nothing to do with Routh. He was perfect. The story was an outdated mess of Superman 1 and 2 ideas and silver age stuff that simply doesn't play now. Spacey's Lex Luthor was written as the old, outdated joke of a character, and he's absolutely nothing like that now, and hasn't been since the '80s. Superman had no villains to fight, and that's kind of a big no-no in a superhero film. And the super-kid idea with Lois was just terrible all around. The script didn't serve Superman in the slightest, and it's a shame. Routh could still be playing Superman if the movie had a proper script.
But hey, he's got a regular gig as The Atom now, and that's cool.
