good director, not so good writer

this guy is really good at building tension and suspense, and he's quite good at cinematic direction. the hatred for him is really overblown, he's a pretty solid horror director. the issue is that his scripts are narratively all over the place and usually ask us to root for terrible characters. if someone else handed him a good horror script, i'm confident he'd make a geat movie.

I totally agee. Hostel is a guilty pleasure because the script is very flawed, but damn, Roth can really direct horror. So many scenes in that film are so well done.

Bad penmanship is either a product of the school or education system Roth was subject to or a lack of discipline at home regarding his academic performance.
