Has he been typecast too much and will he fade ?

Do you think he's been typecast because of Harry Potter?
Since Potter ended , it doesn't seem like he's really doing any good movies. It looks like most of the projects he's done since Potter ended are just fodder and he's kind of faded out of the spotlight. He's about 27 and while he's obviously talented , I think he may be too famous for being Harry Potter and cannot transition to an adult actor that can be taken seriously.

You don't seem to know what typecast means.

Well, I'm an Alcoholic.

I do know what type cast means mizzaphoenix. Let me re-phrase. I think he is always going to be recognized for being Harry Potter no matter what else he does. if you ask people who Daniel Radcliffe is , oh he's Harry Potter. Unless he gets into another break out role and sheds that image , anything he does , people will see Harry Potter not Dan Radcliffe.

So in that regard , he has been pigeon holed. Most of his life he was Potter and whether or not he can shed that image remains to be seen. So far though he has faded into a bit of obscurity. Plays and forgotten movies. I mean it's been 5 years since Potter ended.

It's a pretty big burden to overcome - 8 movies which practically everybody has seen. I think we all agree that it is a problem. Very few people have been able to shake off iconic roles. Harrison Ford is the only one who comes to mind and even he didn't have 8 films to contend with.

I don't think the last 5 years have been a waste though. You seem to completely discount plays and learning and independent films. He wants the career of a traditional British working actor - constantly working but not necessarily a Hollywood leading man. I think he is doing work he likes and it's been interesting to follow. I think there are certain limitations like height that he also has to contend with.

It's a slow process for a young man to establish a career in acting and I don't think he wants a higher level of fame. By all accounts it's pretty hard to have a 'normal' life for him. Even if we don't get paparazzi photos I think he deals with fans a lot.

Rad i agree with you but Harrison Ford was very lucky because he did the first Indiana Jones movie in the 80s while SW was still fresh so he played two very famous roles at the same time and even with his impressive career he's still known as Han Solo or Indy.I think Dan wont reach Ford's success post-franchise but he's building a very interesting career and most people are starting to see that and they praise him because it's pretty remarkable

No you don't. Typecast literally means to be cast for the same type of role over again. If you think that anything Dan has done outside of Potter reflects this definition, then that is ridiculous.

He's just not a box-office attraction, nothing to do with being typecast.

He's too short, (I've always said that, which means no gravitas), & makes some ridiculous choices too !

Actors aren't really box office attractions any more. It is a combination of things and Dan hasn't really hit the trifecta of conventional movie, good director, and good distribution in his film career. His stage projects have definitely been along those lines. I think he needs to seek out better directors for film at this point. Not all the time, but 1 or 2 and do a serious drama with a good director. I think he's shown he has the ability to lead a film and has great reviews for all his post Potter work.

But I think Potter is definitely holding him back in terms of the kind of press coverage he gets for all his movies and that might be preventing him from some getting cast for some bigger roles. You know the sort of can't have Harry Potter in Star Wars type of attitude or the oh no Harry Potter having gay sex! attitude. I think the audience may have those problems too. It's going to be an issue until he breaks out in something bigger and different.

Good points. Potter has forced him to take rather a long road to good directors, etc., bit I don't think he cares. His stated goal is to act as long as anyone will let him in roles that Interest him. He's had mega stardom, big franchises, and all that comes with it. I also think we can forget that he wouldn't be on the screen at all if it weren't for Potter, so lets be grateful. The other stuff will come.
