His life spanned nearly a century of European history, starting with his birth as a member of the Greek royal family and ending as Britain's longest serving consort during a turbulent reign in which the thousand-year-old monarchy was forced to reinvent itself for the 21st century.

He was known for his occasionally racist and sexist remarks -- and for gamely fulfilling more than 20,000 royal engagements to boost British interests at home and abroad. He headed hundreds of charities, founded programs that helped British schoolchildren participate in challenging outdoor adventures, and played a prominent part in raising his four children, including his eldest son, Prince Charles, the heir to the throne.

I think we found the racist in the house when Meghan was complaining about someone saying how dark is the son. In any case I still have mad respect for a guy whose been through those times and met some of the greats/heroes of WW2 along with escaping the times where they were wiping out the monarchy around the world. He's seen a lot that's for sure. I consider the Queen 2 era as the last standing monarch for Britain. Rest are just normal folk that never really accomplished much or seen much in times of peace. After she goes, so goes the monarchy in my mind and are just moochers and Kardashians.

How The Crown changed Prince Philip's image as an old man who was prone to racist gaffes

https://www.nytimes.com/2021/04/09/arts/television/prince-philip-the-crown.html

Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh and longtime husband to Queen Elizabeth II, died today at age 99 having had his image transformed by the Netflix series. "Since 2016, the hit show has taken viewers inside the British royal family, showing it in all its glittering — and frequently grubby — glory," says Alex Marshall. "And for Prince Philip, it’s fair to say the show transformed his image, at least in Britain. For most younger people here, Prince Philip has long been known as simply a liability, an old man prone to gaffes, often racist ones. But in The Crown, Matt Smith, the British actor, showed a far more vital and complex man who’d played a key role in modernizing some aspects of royal life even as he snarled at its constraints. In the show’s first seasons, covering the 1940s to 1960s, Smith portrayed Prince Philip as 'a castrated alpha male,' Tim Lewis wrote in The Guardian, who frequently came across as a 'whining, childish husband,' Mike Hale wrote in The New York Times. For the last two seasons, which bring the story up to the 1980s, Tobias Menzies took over the role, and transformed Prince Philip again. Menzies’ Philip is a man growing into middle age and seeing the absurdity of the trappings of royalty, even as he remains committed to the institution and its traditions. In the most recent season, Prince Philip was also pivotal in convincing Prince Charles, his son, to marry Diana Spencer."

Who knows what the future holds? I'm confident Charles and William will rise to the occasion since Queen Elizabeth taught them what she knows.

I read a royal friend stated it might have been Anne, who knows ? Hopefully if it was her, she apologized. Although the damage is done. Sometimes I wonder about things like that, but keep it to .myself. The person who stated that possibly did not mean to be disrespectful. But they should have respected the parent's feelings.

Harry told Oprah it happened before they got married, so it was before Meghan got pregnant. And apparently it’s been taken very much out of context.

reply

Thanks. I did not hear that part, to be honest I have only seen snippets. Once the hoopla dies down, I might watch the entire thing. I think if COVID had not happened, naturally Harry would have made an attempt to visit his grandparents. Despite all the acrimony on both sides, which is very sad.

You can read the full transcript online. Here’s the part when Harry says it was before they got married:

Oprah:[…] Meghan shared with us that there was a conversation with you about Archie’s skin tone.

Harry: Mm-hmm.

Oprah: What was that conversation?

Harry: That conversation I’m never going to share, but at the time . . . at the time, it was awkward. I was a bit shocked.

Oprah: Can you . . . can you tell us what the question was?

Harry: No. I don’t . . . I’m not comfortable with sharing that.

Oprah: OK.

Harry: But that was . . . that was right at the beginning, right?

Oprah: Like, what will the baby look like?

Harry: Yeah, what will the kids look like?

Oprah: What will the kids look like?

Harry: But that was right at the beginning, when she wasn’t going to get security, when members of my family were suggesting that she carries on acting, because there was not enough money to pay for her, and all this sort of stuff. Like, there was some real obvious signs before we even got married that this was going to be really hard.

Thanks for the link.

Harry appears evasive and is saying basically nothing. I get the impression he doesn't want to contradict Meghan's lies. I also heard he misinterpreted the entire conversation and this nonanswer doesn't contradict that.

Lady Colin Campbell is the one who revealed Princess Anne as being the relative. According to her, the entire conversation was taken out of context and skin color was never mentioned..

Lady C almost always downplays the existence of any racism so who knows what the complete truth is.

Muggins is racist.

reply

That is a dumb thing to say, but she is hurt and bitter. Who can blame her. Although I feel 50/50 about both camps.

The ‘how dark is the son’ comment, if it ever occurred at all, was the usual harmless musing about what the baby will look like, especially when the parents look quite different. But let’s not go overboard here - Meghan is not a black person, she’s a quater black - all this nonsense is just SJW desperation to squeeze a racial issue out of a situation that doesn’t have one. They spend 24/7 trying to start race wars with fake stories of racial hatred.

Also, Harry confirmed that neither grandparent made the supposed comment, so Phil’s out of the question.

The only thing to glean from that whole situation is that Meghan is a manipulative shrew, and Harry needs to kick her to the curb ASAP.

TRUE!

They've got nothing better to do, I guess.

reply

Correct. They’re bored, over-privileged children of a successful system that affords them enormous wealth and comfort, and they’re intellectually flabby and stupid, which makes them easy targets for Communists.
