I personally think her line reading is----in Alex Vause's words---- mamazing
But seriously......we can agree to disagree, but I think it's fair to say that acting isn't just line reading.
A famous acting coach once said "Acting is reacting", and I think Laura excels at the non-verbal aspect of it.
Take, for example, her work in the drama class scene in episode 3 of this current season of "Orange is the New Black". Her character (Alex) is listening to Piper's monologue about her reasons for getting Alex thrown back in prison. It's an emotional scene, and one that is very important to their story arc. Taylor Schilling does a really wonderful job, but look at Laura's facial expressions and body posture, and how they subtly change as the scene progresses. There is a good reason why the director choose to give her almost equal screen time, despite the fact that she doesn't utter a single word.
This is just one example of her fine work in "Orange". I could list many more (and not just from this season) but acting style is a subjective thing. I actually debated the same topic on another site....and neither I nor my opponent were able to change each other's minds; I applauded Laura's nuanced portrayal of Alex and the subtle things she does in scenes but the other person didn't see it that way... and that's fine. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but they need to be able to back it up. I think that's only fair.
