Unfortunately, the decision-making factor in these things aren't that unbiased, a lot of the time. Julianne Moore is an exceptional actress and was really great in Still Alice. But, most people regard it as a sentimental/apology win. It's a travesty that she didn't win for either Boogie Nights or Far From Heaven, losing to the unremarkable performances by Basinger and Kidman. Especially Basinger. What was that win about?
Rosamund was phenomenal in Gone Girl and in a different year, she would've been much more of a contender to win. She won a lot of critical awards, which is usually a sign of someone who could've taken home the Oscar. But, Julianne's campaign blotted her out. And as far as I know, her acting experience hasn't been "bad." Sure, she might not be everyone in the world's cup of tea. But, most of the critics I've read have said that she has always been wonderful in her supporting roles and that her being the lead was long overdue.
