Such a bad Blomkvist...

I've read all 3 books and not only does this guy not fit the profile of Mikael Blomkvist but he 1) expresses almost no emotions, ever, 2) always has the same dead look in his eyes as if he's bored with what he's doing and 3) makes the character seem alienating to the audience. He just doesn't make the character, an honest, incorruptible everyman, seem as if he's absolutely invested in his work or that he cares about what he does. Those things are essential to the Mikael Blomkvist I read and knew. Even in 'Played with Fire' he just had zero emotion even when he was (SPOILER) watching the video of Lisbeth getting raped from the first film. That's when the actor totally lost me and made me all the more reluctant to watch the third film (though eventually I did).

Daniel Craig on the other hand, played out the emotions perfectly appropriately; he knew when to play the concerned and baffled expressions and to what extent to carry them to remain faithful to the character's engrossed ethic and connections with everyone else on screen. He didn't play them too heavy-handed but played them just right, and at some points was able to bring light to the movie when Mara wasn't available to.

Anyway, the Swedish films were still brilliant but no thanks to this guy's portrayal of an important aspect of the series. If it weren't for Noomi Rapace being able to bring it all to life the Millennium films would've bombed

Well it is like they say about opinions, everyone has one. I just think you are so wrong, and from other reviews there are a lot of people who agree with me.
Michael Nyqvist played the part very well. He did show emotion by turning away from the computer. That was out of respect for Lizbeth and because it sickened him.
IF your just a Daniel Craig fan why not say so. This was not one of his best works. He was cold and hard and the film went in a different direction. If your opinion counts, then there wouldn't be a delay on the sequels.
I speak for the rest of the fans of the Millenium Series, Three cheers for Michael and the whole Cast.

In the open moments of TGWTDT, Michael Nyvist was not what I expected from the book. However, about 15 minutes in I was hooked. I found his performance to be powerful.

I think Daniel Craig's performance was fine, but it did not grip me.

If you didn't notice the emotional presence of Nyqvist as Blomkvist then you weren't paying attention. TGWTDT was the first film I saw with Nyqvist and, as well as the trilogy, I've watched a couple of his other films; he is emotionally expressive in an authentic way. Not vapid or hysterical in an effort to show grief, fear, sorrow, anger or despair.

Edit: Happy Birthday Micke.

I absolutely agree. I find him to be an extremely poor choice for Blomkvist. I was taken aback by his beer gut and seriously pockmarked skin. His performance was stone cold and had no more feeling to it than if he were reading a phone book.

I have to say though, Noomi was the only standout in the series. I had no emotional attachment to any of them. Complete waste of time, and I was told the Swedish adaptation was so good. Not only was the script poorly done but the casting director had to be on crack.

I think Nyqvist is a great actor - and he has deservedly won a fair few awards for it.

But I'm sorry to say he wasn't the right choice for Blomkvist. In the book, he's described as in his mid-40's, tall, a bit lanky and, if not a handsome man, in possession of a fair bit of sex appeal. Those are not Nyqvist's qualities. That's all there is to it. Up into his 30's, he had that little something (or, at least, that's what women tell me). But he was a bit too old for this role and it shows.

Still, I'm glad he gets to do some international productions as of late - although it's mostly stereotypical baddies. But hey, I'm sure he has some fun with it.

As for Craig, he was a better choice. But personally I thought he was too stylish and, actually, too athletic. Basically, too much Bond. Blomkvist should be a scruffy journalist, a lover-not-a-fighter kinda guy.

Movies are not the books people. Nyqvist had an honest fighter for right look. For that you do not want someone who is movie-star beautiful. That's my opinion anyway, I don't know what some of you are thinking. It would have been like casting Charlize Theron as the Girl.

reply

I don't know why do you think like that but actually I liked him more than craig.

Me too, much more, the American movies were not as bad as I thought, but I am glad I saw the originals first, the creation of another country's culture and behavior really made a good difference.

I adore Daniel Craig, but I hated his film and even more Rooney Mara with a red hot passion. In that scene where he's watching the video of what Burman did to Lisbet, his disgust was not only palpable but you could see the fear he had for what Lisbet was about to go through. If you didn't see that then clearly you didn't watch the same film.

Sound the typical Swedish stereotype ... mustn't dissappoint people's prejudices now. I thought he was great in those movies and others. But odd I used to get him mixed up with another Scandinavian guy who looks very similar to him.

Funny using Daniel Craig and a more appropriate emoter.
