One of the greatest British Comedy Actors EVER
I discovered Bill Nighy for the first time in the one role I do not think any other actor could populate, let alone so completely: Davy Jones in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2006). As for the rest of the cast, let's just say Nighy's presence on the set lifts everyone else's boat. 😝
I bought the POTC DVDs for Nighy and could give a toss about the rest of the cast. The special effects team at Disney combine with an actor so perfect for this role I'll never look at Spandex the same way ever again: His height; that squid; the nasal quality of his voice; and crowning it all, a "stage presence" so intense he could stand in a corner at the opposite end of a large room and you will notice him.
In fact, there's only one other male actor of Nighy's stature that I can think of (one of our own on this side of the pond as we like to say) and that's Robert John Burke. Treat yourself to No Such Thing (2001) for a great story and perfect casting, in which Julie Christie turns in another star performance to her long list of credits.
