What went wrong with Mandy Moore's music career?

I think there were a number of factors in Mandy Moore not sustaining her success in the music industry.share
The first was that she just didn’t have good music. She had one catchy single “Candy” but none of her other singles ever caught on in a big way and none of them ever had any critical success. The other fact that really hurt her was that when she released her debut album in 1999 it was at the height of the teen pop/bubblegum pop era and she had stiff competition from Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Jessica Simpson and the many huge boy bands of the day and compared to her contemporaries Mandy Moore always seemed like a bit of a footnote and never truly measured up.
While Britney, Christina, Backstreet Boys and Nsync were raking up multi platinum albums and top 10 singles, the highest Mandy ever charted a single was #24 in 2000, her first and only single to reach the top 30 of the US Billboard Singles Charts.
She also had significant success in acting, which took a lot of her time during what would have been her prime years of commercial viability as a singer. When those movie roles dried up she kind of disappeared for awhile, and when she did return to singing her last two albums were commercial failures.
Mandy also apparently had a terrible marriage to Ryan Adams, and has cited his negative influence as a reason she stopped recording. She called him “psychologically abusive” (see link below) and said that he was very controlling and essentially discouraged her from working with other producers (besides him) and that it prevented her from making necessary contacts that would have developed her career.
