It's over for Mandy Moore and Ryan Adams.

Nearly six years after the duo tied the knot, Adams, 40, filed for divorce from Moore, 30, PEOPLE confirms.

The duo pulled off an under-the-radar wedding in March 2009 in Savannah, Georgia, just four weeks after announcing their engagement.

Last March, the couple presented a united – and goofy – front as they celebrated their fifth anniversary with pals including Minka Kelly.

"Celebrating love w the greatest friends and family last night. Feeling incredibly grateful today," Moore wrote on her Instagram page, captioning a shot that featured the men in '50s attire and the women donning funny hats.

The week prior, Moore shared a photo of their marriage certificate. "The best five years...." she wrote.

The couple, who collaborated on his self-titled album last year, have always been private about their relationship.

Explaining why he cut an interview short last fall after being asked about Moore, Adam explained: "I'm a private person and I'll be a gentleman and say I'm not talking about my marriage ever. I'll never talk about it. Ever."

I followed her on twitter, and unfollowed her when she retweeted her husband's tweet that said something to the effect of Republicans being monkeys. I wasn't the only one who was taken aback by it, and unfollowed her, after letting her know why.

I don't care if she doesn't agree with me. I just didn't think she was the type to call people names like that. I just don't know if it was her real opinion or just going along with his.

Truthfully, all politicians are monkey's... They look cute and innocent and when people are watching they perform for their supper. But if you don't give 'em what they need, well, they will go wild kingdom on your ass. I am non-partisan because I believe most politicians don't really give a damn about the average joe. As for Mandy, I have had a crush on her for years and I was under the assumption that she was a 'girl-next-door' type that most men with half a brain wouldn't walk away from. I don't know her personally, but if he didn't wanna stick it out then I guess its his loss. I say she should turn this to her advantage and use that divorce rage as new energy to help revive her career. She does limited voice over work and that pays the bills, but she also has a beautiful voice. Ok Mandy, now is the time to kick some ASS! :)

The stuff they call Obama on a daily basis is disgusting.. The way they have treated our president over the last several years is more disgusting than anything Mandy Moore could have said about them.. Mandy Moore is liberal and so is Ryan and she was a liberal before even marrying him.. It's her opinion and just because its an opinion you don't like does not mean she got it from somewhere else... and apparently you must still like her.. you are here...

I'm here to express my happiness that they are divorcing. I haven't paid the slightest attention her since that retweet.

Regarding Obama, I don't really care what other people are calling anybody else. I don't call him names. I actually like him, except for his relationship with Al Sharpton. I'm talking about what Mandy retweeted.

If you think calling people who have a different political opinion, that says more about you and her than the "monkeys."

Those "monkey's" on a daily basis have called Obama everything under the sun... Being called a monkey by mandy moore is actually tamed to what they have said... and What is wrong with Al Sharpton??? Because he wants everyone to be treated the same..????? Because he does not just shut his mouth when wrong doings happens..??? Oh should he just bow his head when there is an injustice??? I guess your the type that thinks people should not complain when they are not treated right...

What don't you get? We're talking about Mandy Moore here, not some vague "they."

But, if your a champion of Al Sharpton, there is not going to be any reasoning going on here. I said I like Obama, so now you come after me with Sharpton.

What's wrong with him? All he cares about is himself. He doesn't care about justice or anything else. Do a little research - start with Tawana Brawley, move onto Crown Heights riots, and keep going until you find out how much money he's made and hasn't paid taxes on.
