Would Portal 2 be as good of a game without Stephen?

No, it wouldn't. It would be boring and repetitive near the end. His character gives the game so much more depth. To me anyway. Good job Stephen.

The first portal did perfectly well without him

Portal and it's sequel are made by one of the most respected video game production teams on the planet.
