I agree, if you're a McShane fan, and especially if you only know him from Deadwood (as a lot of American viewers do) it's great to see him do something like Hot Rod just to see what he's capable of. In a recent interview he said that now that he can afford to pick and choose the jobs he does he chooses a part not for how it will look on his CV, but whether it's something he's never done before and if it looks like he will have fun doing it. He's doing Blackbeard now because he's never done a huge multi-million-dollar swashbuckler before, and he says it's been loads of fun. He seems amused that so many moviegoers consider him "too good" to do roles in films they turn their noses up at: "If you love acting, then you act. You don't worry about the snobs or the people who want to slot you in one character for the rest of your life".
