Blackbeard...

Though I'm excited for the next Pirates installation, I can't help but imagine that every time I see this guy playing Blackbeard on screen, I'll just keep picturing him beating the snot out of a mustached Andy Samberg.

I think I'm gonna have a difficult time taking this character seriously, as hilarious as he was in Hot Rod...

Just sayin'.

You best be trolling, if not, get your hands on a few episodes of Deadwood. Ian McShane is a very versatile actor, I have the utmost faith that he can play Blackbeard.

reply

I am most certainly not!

I know he's got incredible range, as he's shown, but unfortunately, Hot Rod was the first time I ever saw McShane, so no matter what I see him in, or who I see him portray, I can't help but see him as Frank. It's put a hilarious damper on everything...

Well, that's your lost, first time I saw him was in "Kings", I then went on to watch "Deadwood". You says he is hilarious in "Hot Rod", what are you thoughts on the movie, and as someone who has seen some of his greater works, would I appreciate him in that role?

reply

Obviously, "Hot Rod" is no great masterpiece, but I think it's good for a nonsensical chuckle. McShane's character gives the movie a little more depth, as he utilizes a more deadpan style of humor...If you like him, then I'd recommend it, if nothing else for a new take on the actor.

I agree, if you're a McShane fan, and especially if you only know him from Deadwood (as a lot of American viewers do) it's great to see him do something like Hot Rod just to see what he's capable of. In a recent interview he said that now that he can afford to pick and choose the jobs he does he chooses a part not for how it will look on his CV, but whether it's something he's never done before and if it looks like he will have fun doing it. He's doing Blackbeard now because he's never done a huge multi-million-dollar swashbuckler before, and he says it's been loads of fun. He seems amused that so many moviegoers consider him "too good" to do roles in films they turn their noses up at: "If you love acting, then you act. You don't worry about the snobs or the people who want to slot you in one character for the rest of your life".

Oh god the only thing decent about Hot Rod, was the scenes with Ian in them. I'm so glad there is the button for fast fowarding.

It's....interesting, isn't it?

Personally my earliest memory of Ian is as the charming 'Lovejoy' but as soon as i heard he was playing Blackbeard i was (and still am) genuinely excited!

I think its perfect casting but you will have to wait until May to make your decision!
