My cousin and I met him when we were in New York, April 2008. We went to see his play and afterwards I made my cousin stand with me on the street at the stage door for nearly an hour and a half. The rest of the cast came and went, other theatre patrons gave up and took off... it was freezing cold and had been raining the previous night, but I was determined.
FINALLY the door open and out came Ian McShane. I called to him. "Mr. McShane! Mr. McShane!" He came over and shook my hand. I told him how much we enjoyed the play, and what a fan of his I was. He signed my program. I told him my cousin and I were visiting from CA for my birthday, and we'd come specifically to see his play. He told me, "Happy birthday, darling." Then I asked if he'd mind taking a picture with me and he very graciously obliged. Then he got in his car and left, leaving me quite delighted that he'd been so lovely and kind and generous with his time.
That's a great story. :)
shareI second that!! Obviously a man who hasn't forgotten his roots....and fans!!!
shareI met Ian recently at a dinner at Manchester United. It was a thank you dinner for Alex Ferguson on behalf of the retired players association. You may know that Ian's father used to play for ManUtd and his father is also one of the founders of the association that hosted the dinner. He is a very genuine guy and took time for anyone who wanted to have a talk with him or get a signature.
He was unexpectedly asked to be the auctioneer for a small auction of memorabilia, the benefits of which would go to local charities. He took the microphone and it sounded like he had been doing nothing else for years. He obviously does not need a script. In fact he also did not shy away from spending his own money to support the cause, as he bought one item and immediately put it back up for auction.
He also looks a lot younger than 72.
