I was hoping he would just go his own way writing them, ignore anything in the series he didn't like. I'm sure he would have handled Denaris losing her mind and becoming a complete despot better.
What's odd about it? I think a lot of people were hoping Martin might be able to do better than the writers of the show when it came to wrapping up the story.
Lots of fantasy scifi authors have croaked before finishing their epics. Doesn't really bother me. Might even be better to have an ill fitting ending written by somebody else to keep the "what if" dream alive rather than the "welp, he botched it".
I thought his strategy was pretty good. Let the show throw its ending out there, maybe with your ideas, maybe not, see how it lands. Adjust and then deliver. I got the bad feeling those actually were all his ideas and everybody hated them and he simply threw his hands up in the air about it.
I suspect the books are actually written. He just doesn't want them published in his lifetime. Somebody will come along and clean them up like Tolkien's son did and we'll all appreciate them a lot more because he's dead. That's a good strategy too.
That's an interesting take. That would explain why we haven't seen a whole lot from him in recent years. In the past he's been a steadily productive writer. No Stephen King of course, but he usually put out a book every few years.
