He's been saying he's finished the majority of the The Winds of Winter for about six years

I've been reading a little about the history of Martin's comments regarding book six, and it's been about the same for six years.

He says he intends to finish it but I have my doubts about anything he says about the book at this point.

Seven years ago he was talking about it being months away, or it being likely to come out that year or the next, as if the end was in sight. Last year he said was about 3/4 of the way through it. It doesn't seem like much has changed, really. Maybe he's been doing a lot of rewriting.

I firmly believe he's just burnt out on the series. He's just stalling with these updates, hoping people will forget about the last books. He's made his fortune, he's getting old and I doubt he has any burning need to get the finale published. One day he will pass on and his estate will contract Sanderson to finish the books, if anyone still cares at that point.

After watching the last season of the series, my interest in this world died on the spot. I doubt I would bother reading the books if they came out tomorrow.

I think he might be burnt out on writing generally. Over the last twelve years he's had published a few novellas, a couple of reference books and histories connected to a Song of Ice and Fire, and that's about it.

He won’t finish it. Game of Thrones is not a work that will really stand the test of time.

I heard a rumor… and I don’t want to speak out of school here… but my sources tell me that JRRM has in fact finished The Winds of Winter; but has unfortunately eaten the only copy of the finished draft.

A small setback, if true.
