accents

she's SO INCREDIBLY good with accents , does anyone know just how difficult it is for a scottish person to pull off a southern american accent so smoothly?

reply

I was totally blown away by her Southern accent. Came to check if anyone had the same reaction.

reply

OMG, I was completely SHOCKED that she's from Scotland!

Her accent sounds PERFECT to me, although I am not from the South! Are there any Southern people here who can confirm that?

reply

It's as difficult for her as it would be easy for you to do a Scottish accent.

reply

Er...yes I know that! Why are you saying that? :-)

reply

Well, I assume you are American and that makes it hard for you to do a foreign accent because Americans are virtually unexposed to foreign cultures compared to other countries which are constantly exposed to American culture so they hear your accent a lot as opposed to you hearing theirs very rarely.

But aren't you contradicting yourself then? By saying 'It's as difficult for her as it would be easy for you to do a Scottish accent'. Because accoring to your own logic Kelly Macdonald, being from the UK, would find it less difficult to imitate a Southern accent than an American speaking fluently Scottish.

But I still don't understand what your response has to do with my question. I was just wondering if there would be any Southern people her who could confirm the idea I have of her doing the Southern accent perfectly.

Took me 20 minutes of thinking, "Damn she looks familiar... Just saw her on the telly the other night... where from where from?" before I realised "My GOD it's Diane from Trainspotting!" Completely unrecognisable in such a convincing character. Glad she's made so much progress.

I'm Southern, born and raised, and I can vouche for the accuracy of her accent. She pulled it off flawlessly, in an excellent performance.
Incidentally, doing accents well is not an ability reserved to foreigners. It's something one either has the knack for, or doesn't. I know plenty of Americans who can do a variety of dead-on foreign accents. I also know plenty of people from foreign countries who have lived in the United States most of their lives and still cannot sound as if they come from any region of the US, and they couldn't be any more immersed in US culuture if they tried.
