I know what you mean. I do think making her Irish appeals to his heritage (there were a fair few gangsters during that period with Irish decent). And it makes more sense in terms of history with Irish immigration during that time. I guess some people consider Irish and Scottish to be similar if they're not from their because they're both Celtic (it's like when they cast Scottish Gerard Butler as an Irishman in 'P.S I Love You' - that bugged me a little). I actually didn't think MacDonald's Irish accent was that good when I first heard it, but it's grown on me. I think I was just too used to hearing her sound Scottish.
