why not doing any new movies or tv shows?

Has he taken a break?

He's actually been very busy doing movies. Check his IMDB page for the list.

Two upcoming projects... a miniseries for AMC and BBC which is already filmed and will be airing soon. And a series for HULU that he's about to film.

Besides the four films and two series he's done since House ended (which are listed on his IMDB page), he also did two world concert tours. He's also been signed to do a new HULU series. He's been very busy.

I beg to differ. All the make-work projects cited here pale in comparison to ascending the mountain top with "House". His post-"House" career is becoming as unimpressive as poor Joe Pesci's fade into nothingness. Unless you're a fanatical fan, for whom Hugh and his agent can do no wrong by definition, you are likely to wonder what the OP did - where's the upward movement?

Lucille Ball after her RKO movie career and with her never-equaled "I Love Lucy" TV success went on to run an entire studio of her own Desilu, even counting the original "Mission: Impossible" and "Star Trek" series among her studio properties. (Of course her later movies and TV work could not hold a candle to "Lucy".)

Ok, first of all, just what are you assuming he should be doing? He's stated that he isn't interested in getting involved with a series like "House" again. He seems to be doing just what he's indicated he wants to do; appearing in limited episode series that only require a few months commitment. "Veep" and "The Night Manager" are critically acclaimed series; "Chance" looks like it could be very interesting.

And he's gotten the chance to "live the dream", in his case, release two NOLA style CDs (both well reviewed), and tour to sell-out crowds.

Lucille Ball and Desilu? Really? I've never read that he's expressed any interest in owning his own production company, much less a studio…if such a thing were possible in this day and age…which it really isn't.

He's actually doing very well.

He just wanted to focus on his music. A lot of actors dream of being musicians much more than actors. Hugh Jackman, Billy Bob Thornton, Bruce Willis and the list goes on and on. Billy Bob is a good example seeing as he snapped at an interview when the host wanted to question him about acting. Thornton got extremely pissed because he only wanted to talk about his music.

Wasn't it her husband who ran Desilu and not Ball herself?

Well, he won a Golden Globe for The Night Manager, along with an Emmy nomination, so there's that.

A Joe Pesci comparison is off the wall bonkers.
