I really think it depends. Let's not forget Laurie is a comedic actor as well and that side of him benefits greatly from his more easy-going and "more prone to quirkiness" British accent.
I agree with what you said about his American accent adding more roughness and authority to his overall performance, and for roles like House that is absolutely perfect. I also like that he sings in an American accent on his albums since they're very New Orleans-y and would sound more than a bit off in British.
However, I don't wish it was permanent at all. I see him as a down to earth, easy-going guy so his accent fits him perfectly (not strange, I guess). Let's just agree that it's fantastic that he has that American one in store.

Only one other English actor I can think of, besides Laurie, with a perfectly affected American accent: John Mahoney.

because his own accent is really cool too. I personally love the British accent its one of the most beautiful accents in the whole world but Hugh's American accent sounds very sexy like you said a little more authoritative It gives a very different tone to his voice.

Funny how can an actor's sound so different when he changes the accent and i didn't notice that before, ive heard Daniel Day Lewis and Christian Bale with their American accent and never noticed before their tone chsnged that much.

HL evolved his accent for "House". Listen to him in early season one, and his voice is quieter, softer. Sure, he raised it when he was trying to make a point, but generally it was close to his own natural range. And closer the the American accent he used in the Stuart Little films. As the show progressed, he used a deeper and occasionally harsher tone.

He's using an American accent in "Chance", and it is different than the one he used in "House"; It's quieter, softer, yet darker. Eldon Chance, like House, is a very damaged man, but without House's anger which gave him his strength to fight. And you can here that in his voice.

I will do so, but also it sounds a little more grave when he speaks with the American accent a bit raspy as well but i will check two episodes from different seasons and notice the difference.

I need tonfind chance however i can, stuff like this makes me wished i lived in the states and be mad we don't have Hulu. Maybe i should check a few clips from Stewart little to see the difference as well.

Oh God yes! He sounds very ruggedly masculine with the American accent. Very sexy. I too sometimes fantasize that he loses his English accent and keeps the American one. Lol.
