Is she really going to play Greta Garbo in a biopic?

May 21, 2013

Carice van Houten plays super creepy and strangely sexy Melisandre on Game of Thrones, but she’s getting set to take on the role of a different beautiful lady in a new movie. Screen Daily reports that Carice will produce and star in a film about legendary Swedish film star, Greta Garbo.

Carice, who is from the Netherlands, is no stranger to playing sultry, enigmatic women, as she has shown in her role as the red priestess on GoT, so this seems like a good fit. Plus, it turns out Greta Garbo had a big impact on Carice’s life.

Carice explained to Screen Daily, “Greta Garbo has gotten to me more than any other movie star and never let me go. I am strongly drawn to her story.”

Greta Garbo, for those of you who need to brush up on your film history, was a huge star in the 1920s and 30s. She was also one of the few actors to successfully make the leap from silent film star to modern sound film.

In case you’re wondering how well Carice will fit into the role, some of Garbo’s films include: The Temptress, The Divine Woman, and The Mysterious Lady. Sounds a lot like Melisandre to us!

As a huge Greta Garbo fan, I don't think anyone should ever try to play her in a movie. I believe she was truly incomparable and I can't imagine anyone, no matter how good an actress, could ever re-create her specific aura and presence.

Looking on the bright side, one good thing that could come out of this movie (if it happens) is making more people interested in Greta Garbo and her work. I think it's a shame that she's largely forgotten these days.

Garbo was an answer on "Jeopardy!" a few months ago and nobody guessed her name. That drove me crazy. I yelled her name at the screen like 5 times! It's great to see another Garbo fan on here. I like your user name!
