She is amazing - great actress, and speaks four languages (?)!

I loved her in Black Book. Her performance was absolutely amazing. She is also amazing because she can speak four languages! These are Dutch, German, English and Hebrew. I can be sure that she can speak Dutch and German fluently, but can she speak English and Hebrew fluently? In the film, she spoke a lot of Dutch and German but only a few lines for English and Hebrew.

reply

She can speak English fluently, but not Hebrew, she just learned her lines for the film. She speaks German very well, she even can give interviews in German, but then her boyfriend is German, that's Sebastian Koch, who plays Müntze in "Black Book".

reply

most people in Holland speak English.

and the educated ones speak it fluently.

reply

EVERY Dutch person speaks English. It is nothing special. English, German and French are basic languages you simply MUST learn in the Netherlands. I'm fifteen years old (from the Netherlands) and I can speak and read Dutch, English, German, French and Spanish fluently. It's nothing special here. The Netherlands has a history of international business, so you have to learn a bit more languages at school than the average in the world.

reply

That's excellent. All countries should be like the Netherlands.

It's not very common here if you speak and read 5 languages fluently. If you can, good for you, but the majority of the educated people in Holland master about 2 languages fluently and 'some' German or French.

Most of the people in Holland can make themselves understood in English and understand it when its level is not too high or when it's being adapted for their non-native ears, but a minority speaks it fluently. Obviously, the higher the level of education the more people who speak it fluently (I'm guessing you're doing VWO?).

reply

Yup, and more importantly, since she's now taking major roles in American productions, she has to lose her accent completely and learn how to sound American like Famke Janssen did. That's hard to do so I'm curious what she'll sound like in her next films!

reply

Well, I hope she won't lose her soul. She is European and Dutch, I hope she will remember that.
