Why?

I'm probably going to get hammered for this, but it's something that has been puzzling me. I can't be the only one wondering this too. It took me a little while, but I finally realized one day how many of this guy's movies I've seen. I've seen The Rookie, Ladder 49, Friday Night Lights, and Carlito's Way: Rise to Power. After I saw him in Rise to Power, I started recognizing him. This guy is a talented actor and he's starred in some pretty good movies. My question is, why would the kid from The Rookie star in Hostel? Why would Jay Hernandez lower himself by starring in that? Fans of Hostel will probably be all over me for this post, but I know there is someone else out there wondering the same thing I am. I know there's a fan of Jay's out there that is just as disappointed as I am.

If I was to write a review for the movie Hostel I probably would've thrown this in somewhere, but I hated that movie so much, it made me so mad, and I thought it was such *beep* that I'm not even going to bother writing a review. It's not worth the time or the work. It wasted enough of my time the day I went to see it. I got in for free, but it didn't really matter. The movie wasted my time and I'm sorry I didn't walk out.

He was the best actor in that film. I dunno, maybe to him the movie was a lot better written down. I liked the movie though. It wasn't great but it wasn't horrible. I'm just a fan of any horror movie, even the bad ones.

I don't even consider Hostel to be a horror movie. It's not scary at all. It's just sickening and stupid. If I was Jay Hernandez I never would've starred in that movie. I doubt the movie looked good on paper. There's really nothing to the movie.

Well I liked Hostel but I think Jay made that movie, it he wasn't in the first one then I don't think it would of been as good. Perhaps Jay liked the role of Paxton and wanted to try it out.

It takes more than being convincing in your role to be a good actor; it involves performing well in challenging roles. A lot of people play the same kind of character from movie to movie (type-casting). Some pretty much play themselves, and that’s not really talent. For example, I enjoyed watching films with Sarah Michelle Gellar (or even her In Buffy), but she pretty much had the same personality across most films (and she isn’t too different in person from what I hear). Until Sideways (2004), Paul Giamatti looked like he played the same kinds of roles like in comedies or playing a “nerd” or something (I’m thinking Paycheck (2003)). For Jay Hernandez in Hostel, he played a role that differed from my mental image of him such that even I hardly recognized him.

I’m not a fan of Hostel, but I didn’t think it was too bad, though like many, it was very hard to watch and I don’t need to discuss that here. Jay is a great actor, and he did very well as Paxton in Hostel. I remember him as early as in the TV show, Hang Time (1995), and in Crazy/Beautiful (2001). I’ve seen a few of the movies you mentioned, too. Even though this isn’t considered a horror movie, you’d have to admit a lot of horror movies don’t display a lot of great acting! I think House of Wax (2005) was not too good, and it was Chad Michael Murray’s first horror film, but at least he did something different than the roles we’re used to seeing him in (Gilmore Girls, A Cinderella Story, especially One Tree Hill). Unlike Jay, Chad in House of Wax hurts more (in my opinion) than helps his career. So I wouldn’t say Jay he “lowered himself” because if anything, he took a lead role and excelled in it.

Making it in the business is hard enough, but being a person of color adds to the obstacles. I’m not saying Jay is just taking what he could get, but I don’t see why he wouldn’t want to do Hostel since it is a lead role and somewhat challenging. I don’t mean to speak so highly of Hostel, but I don’t understanding how one would feel disappointed he took the part? Playing in diverse roles definitely shows you have talent and acting skills, and I think Jay Hernandez displays that in the films I’ve seen him in and Hostel adds to that list. Also, it adds a genre or two of film that he is capable of doing, showing he’s well-rounded.

So I hope you don’t think I’m hammering you on your post at all! I really just wanted to know why you’d think Jay doing Hostel would be lowering himself or a disappointment.
