Why is he always cast as a firefighter, police officer, or some other
first responder? I've noticed these seem to be the only roles many Latinos seem to get.

shareWell he was the lead in Hostel. Who happened to be a student and not a fire fighter, police officer or any other such thing...
Grindhouse he was eating dinner, so not sure he was any of those there either.
Carlito's Way he was Carlito, also not a cop or fireman...
Sometimes when you look at a cigar, you want to see a C*ck. Sometimes it's just a cigar. In this instance, I think you are seeing what you want to see. He's done varied roles, you just focus on the ones that are falling into your perceived injustice. I just don't see it with him or "Latino Actors" in general.
It's coz he's so hunky!!
Just joking, I agree that it's a shame that he's typecast into horror movies. His acting seems decent enough to do some other kinds of movies. Hopefully, that day will come.
To the OP... I suppose he has had his fair share of roles as cops and firemen. I'd say though, it has more to do with his physical appearance than anything (age, build, haircut... these things make him convincing in those particular roles I guess)... but as celtcub pointed out, he's had plenty of jobs not playing those parts.
To celtcub... The cigar analogy was good, I'm stealing it and using it in daily conversations from now on.
To I Love Books... First, I like how you named yourself "I Love Books", ha, good name... Second, his more prominent jobs have been in horror movies (clearly), but he's had plenty of other roles besides that... but ultimately his resume is still fairly small, give it time to build,(unless maybe horror is just a genre he prefers, who knows).
same reason will smith is always a cop. its just what they are good at. what they are known for. and personally, im not complaining about seeing hot guys in uniforms!
HEYYY!!
He's mostly type-cast.
shareWAIT! I'M SURE HE IS VERY HAPPY & NOT COMPLAINING~I MEAN I WOULD BE!!!!!!!;> GO MONTEBELLO!
"HOW VERY!!!!!!!"
Every role in Hollywood is type casted. Do you think forty year old men would play the hot football player or a 40 year old woman would play the head cheerleader in a teen movie? Every role is type casted down to age, race, skin color, ethnicity. Look up The Sopranos, A Bronx Tale, and Goodfellas. They all have actors with Italian last names because those are all movies and shows about Italians, just like Jay Hernandez is casted in latino roles.
sharego watch his older movies
i've got feelings too, ya know - inbetweeners
