FUEL up! The next Mad Max is returning to Australia for the latest instalment of the dystopian juggernaut.

The prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road starring TOM HARDY will be filmed in and around Broken Hill. Director GEORGE MILLER is known for keeping any developments with his projects closely guarded secrets, but Page 13 has the inside scoop from a highly placed onset source.

Pre-production is gearing up on the multi-million-dollar action-packed Warner Bros franchise, with NSW’s Broken Hill Studios Miller’s first choice for shooting, which could start as soon as later this year. Mad Max 4 was plagued by delays when extended rain turned the desert green and the uber director had to move location to Namibia.

Tom Hardy is returning as Mad Max.

Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron will be returning in a Mad Max prequel.
But now Broken Hill is back on the barren horizon for the next post-apocalyptic instalment, with the working title Mad Max: The Wasteland. The studio all but confirmed the exciting news, before citing a well-rehearsed line: “We would certainly welcome Mad Max coming back to its spiritual home.”

The script is said to focus on the backstory of Furiosa, played by Oscar winner CHARLIZE THERON.

Hardy and Theron were famously at loggerheads during Fury Road. Method actor Hardy was said to be difficult, but nothing compared with high-maintenance Theron. But after the runaway success of Mad Max 4, the Monster actor is said to be chomping at the bit to be part of the blockbuster, opening her schedule and losing some of the ’tude.

No word yet if original road warrior MEL GIBSON will make an appearance but there would be no need to fear a Mad Mel tirade given the franchise’s scripts are famously word wastelands.

I believe this is not new - I seem to recall that this was discussed when Fury Road came out, Miller already said he had the stories written for the next few movies and I think he said he started storyboarding the next film not long after Fury Road did its run. Did Hardy sign on for 2 or 3 more films I cannot remember. And they said then Furiosa would be the main focus and with the positive response to her character in the movie that pretty much seals it, the next movie would focus on her - but with all the stuff coming out about Hardy and Theron not getting along I figured if it was focusing on Theron Hardy would have a smaller role and then she can die this film and then next film is all Hardy/Max.

The question is did they ever bury the hatchet - not by the looks on their faces during the premieres. It was like smile and get the job done and get me out of here for both of them.

Harvey, it was Tom who was signed on to a multi-film contract for Mad Max, not Charlize. The post-Fury Road news was that there would be sequels, but that Furiosa would not be featured in them. "The Wasteland" was supposed to be Max-centric.

Yes, George said often enough he had tons of footage left over from Fury Road. He also said he wanted to do a small film before he went back into production of another Max. So it was never clear that another MM film would actually get made. All the reported intentions were never backed up with specifics. EXCEPT that Wasteland would focus on Max.

I try not to be a catty bitch on forums, but the way Theron lobbied George to be included in the next Mad Max movie was obvious to anyone who followed the pre-Oscars campaign. I'll admit that the character of Furiosa caught the moment, but long time fans of the franchise, and certainly TH fans, do not want to see Max in the back seat AGAIN. I don't even know how they could work Max into a Furiosa prequel.

Why he'd want to do it all again is beyond me

I don't understand that either. Maybe he (mistakenly) thought that it would be different the second way round?

Let her have the damn thing, he's way too good for Mad Max

Completely agree. Let's give Theron the possibility to hone her acting skills after her Fast &Furious thingy.  And at the very least, we will see if such movies can be successful with only Theron at the helm (my guess is ''not very'' but who knows).

And it showed in his performance, slightly off kilter and totally forgettable

When I think about it, Theron was hardly memorable too...

he looked HOT as hell as Max

at least when he wasn't doing that awful thing with his eyes

Yes, I cringed each time when I saw it. I have no idea what he was trying to achieve with it but the results were not good to put it mildly.

Mel does crazy better

Actually, Mel may be an excellent director choice for Mad Max. And he is certainly not the type of man to put Max constantly in the back seat.

Well, that's would be Miller mistake essentially. If he wants his movie to bomb, that's his choice. Too bad that Hardy is stuck in it. But I feel that Hardy won't be blamed for any potential failure (as he won't be the focus of the film).

One of the (many) weaknesses of Fury Road was that there was no script to speak about. It was essentially about a bunch of people going back and force to the same place. In this context, Furiosa (and maybe to some extent Nux) had a character act: she had some motivation, background, goals and she managed to achieve these goals. The problem is that this character arc was not very compelling in itself. Trying to drag it out artificially for a second film does not make any logical and dramatic sense.

Miller was able to get away with a no script for Fury Road. This courtesy will certainly not be extended again.

Having seen Fury Road more than once though I feel his performance gets better to me with each viewing though he admitted to being confused not being familiar with this style of filming.

I think if your co-star gets paid more than you that is not something you take out on your co-star, that's not their fault they got a better deal just as he is going to be paid more than some other A listers in future movies I suspect. Your issue is with the producers and directors and once you've signed on, you've made a contractual arrangement and you are stuck to it. Moaning and groaning on set if that is what happened is not fair to everyone else working on the movie in the same conditions. Just get on with it.

However Charlize is known to be a diva on set and I am sure it would not be past her to send out chinese whispers to make it look like Hardy was the big problem and she wasn't when the truth was probably both of them. But it is odd because on the whole Hardy has had good relationships with most of his fellow actors, I have never seen an actor who has made so many friends from past projects which also has to say something very positive about him, actors, actresses and directors.

It could not have been easy for TH to be away from home that long though in a location that he really couldn't pop home to London for a weekend whether it is Oz or Africa. Charlize had her family with her.
