Band of Brothers

I will be streaming this excellent series about the US Army Airborne called Easy Company during. I'm at E5 which deals with the disastrous Holland campaign. It was in Holland that the Germans deployed Tigrpanzers for the first time on the Western Front. The American Sherman could not match it's firepower and became as tank battalions called them "portable coffins". The accounts are factual.

Easy Company are lead by Damian Lewis, who leads by example, and Neil McDonough, who leads by charisma. It was the debut of Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy (who have both appeared) and Tom Hardy (not yet). I'm developing grudging respect for David Schwimmer, I hated Friends. He plays a Lieutenant who's decision making doesn't match his ambition. He's a better character actor than I gave him credit for.

We should all consider lucky that we were born post WW II, and not be afraid to defend democracy. We can no even begin to comprehend the generation born during 1916 - 1924 went through. Their courage should be forever honoured.

I consider myself very lucky that I was born way too late. If I had to face down a Tiger, my shorts would not stay white.

BoB is an extraordinary mini series.

The info I got about Tom Hanks giving Tom his first break has been proven true. James McAvoy is in one episode and it's memorable. Michael Fassbender is in several episodes but he's never more than background scenery. Tom appears from E8 onward. In E8 he's also part of the scenery. In E9 and 10 he has specific scenes.

He's in the opening sequence of E9, one of the series rare moments of humour. The episode begins with a forlorn string quartet playing Beethoven amidst a backdrop of total destruction. In the next scene a member of Easy Company uses chocolate to barter with a fraulein for crumpet - he gets slapped. The scene after that, the platoon leader walks in on one of privates (Hardy) who's merrily franking away.

Even though Tom Hanks gave Hardy the best possible start, they have never worked together. Hopefully that will be corrected.

I loved Band of Brothers when it was first on. It's one of the many times I watched Tom Hardy without realizing it.

I guess that's one way to put it. Lol

Yes I found that both in Band of Brothers and Black Hawk Down, Hardy's two Hollywood early projects, he had a way of making the most of the scenes he was in. I mean in Black Hawk Down it was almost farcical though in the end it was not funny that he is one of 3 soldiers who get separated from the rest of their unit in Mogadishu. And of course indeed how can we forget Mr. Hardy's introduction in Band of Brothers. Nor his exit, sniff.

Although different in motif the opening sequence of BoB E9 is structured like the opening sequence of The Sopranos S1,E11 (Big Pussy's gun bust). The ending to both is completely out of left field but not a reach. For Vincent Pastore, it was the highlight of his career. For Tom, he was only getting started.

Of course the best intro of all time is this:

I regret not watching The Wire. I think I was tired of police dramas in general or too busy to be watching much of any TV at the time now but seems like a show people are STILL talking about thanks to Netflix and streaming etc.

I will have to find the whole series somewhere. Michael Kenneth Williams is another great actor to come out of that series along with Idris Elba.

Don't forget Michael B Jordan, he breaks hearts in the series.
