I'm sure it's been asked before, but...

Has being around Apatow's crew derailed his career?

I'm a huge fan of Danny McBride's when he's matched with the right material (LOVE Eastbound and Down, which I'm aware Green directed/helped create), and Pineapple Express was fun and quirky in the way Green's early films were, but with a decidedly mainstream production quality. That's fine, because it was a solid movie.

I had trouble sitting through Your Highness both times I tried to watch it, and found it to be rather disastrous -- and, worst of all, unlike Pineapple Express, it didn't really have Green's directorial flair to back it up. It felt like a substandard movie from any lame director.

Now, his next movie is The Sitter, which is getting bad advance reviews from test screenings and looks like Judd Apatow taking on Adventures in Babysitting. I mean, maybe it will be fun, but Green seems to have taken a HUGE career turnaround since hanging out with Apatow's gang.

Mind, I have nothing against "selling out" or going mainstream -- but losing the qualities that made you great in the first place is a huge disappointment! I hope The Sitter is better than Your Highness, but...

I haven't seen Your Highness yet so I won't say if I agree with the reviews or not. He seems to be taking his career in a direction that he'd been wanting to take from the beginning, if you listen to his audio commentaries on George Washington and All The Real Girls, you can see that he loves comedy and that really wanted to do something funny with Danny McBride who has been working with him since he started (They went to film school together).

I don't understand how you can start out so young making films that are so brilliant and moving and start to turn out more immature work as you get older? Hopefully it was just for the money so he can continue to make indie projects. I thought Prince Avalanche was pretty good and I need to see Manglehorn.
