Don't get me wrong I think he is very charismatic in his roles, but I don't think he has that much range. I don't really know how to describe it but he is kind of always the "underdog-yet super smooth-attractive guy".
shareYes, he really is very good. My favourite performance of his is still Neil in Mysterious Skin. I strongly believe that, if any other actor had filled that role, the film as a whole would have suffered a massive drop in quality. It's truly beautiful work.
Almost always, JGL's best work happens in indie films, more than likely because he has a lot more to work with. Manic, Brick, The Lookout -- all very strong, very different performances. His best mainstream work is probably in 50/50.

shareThing is...does not really matter if we personally think he is a good actor or not. Dude is a major star who gets major roles in major movies. Saying "He is not a good actor" is pretty asinine at this point. I personally think he is a great actor much in the same way I think Keanu Reeves is a good actor. Neither one of them are ground breaking IMHO but they are both stars who elevate any movie they are in.

JGL is light years ahead of Keanu and I like Keanu but he doesn't have JGL's range or authenticity that he brings to his roles. Keanu is good in action roles that don't require a lot of range. And I disagree, JGL does elevate the movies he's in.
