Death Comes to Pemberley

Redart spotted that Matthew Goode is in Death Comes to Pemberley airing on Masterpiece Mystery on Monday - thank you Red.

This is a sequel to `Pride and Prejudice' and MG is playing womanising, bastardy, rogue George Wickham. He was the one who seduced Darcy's sister, Elizabeth Bennett and 15 year old Lydia Bennett in P & P - so you get the picture - he's a cad and a bounder. He's older but not wiser in this sequel.

There's 3 episodes and the last one will have you on the edge of your seat.

So set your PVR, have your smelling salts to hand and enjoy seeing him for more than the usual 5 mins he gets allotted on the Good Wife. Report back what you think - PLEASE!

Glad you are getting the word out. I am both a Jane Austen fan (and P.D. James), and - goes without saying but I will - an MG fan too so am so looking forward to it. It airs on Sunday Oct 26 Masterpiece Mystery on my PBS local channel. I think it's the same elsewhere too.

I received a screener of this. To be honest, Matthew should have played Darcy with another Elizabeth.

Much as I would have liked to have seen him channel his inner Colin Firth - I'm sort of glad he didn't. I don't know whether it is deliberate but he seems to have kept slightly under the radar since that horrible Leap Year aftermath *. Since then, apart from Burning Man in Oz, he's been happy to do the bit parts, ensemble piece and supporting roles. There's a quote (which I can't find right now) - but it was something along the lines of him wanting a long career as a character actor, rather than a short one as a leading man. Darcy is an iconic role - would he really want to put himself in that firing line again? Just my opinion but I'd hate for him to go through that awful experience again.

* digitaldiva knows the story but others may not - when he was promoting Leap Year he got badly stitched up by a journalist and others sort of jumped on the bandwagon. There's some truly nasty stuff on the Leap Year board from people who were quick to judge him. Anyway he was left shell shocked, wondering what the hell happened and didn't work for a while.

Hi BritGirl1988,

I think Matthew would have brought his own spin to Darcy but it was not to be. Still, as much as I liked the actors in other works, there was a static quality to Death Comes to Pemberley that any actor would have had problems with. While I loved Anna Maxwell Martin in The Blechley Circle, I found her miscast as Elizabeth.

I'm glad Matthew is working now and put the whole Leap Year mess behind him. I love him in The Good Wife and can't wait to see his new film with Cumberbatch.

I know what you mean about Anna Maxwell Martin - great actress but a little dour for Lizzie.

Me too - can't wait for Imitation Game. Funny he's playing Hugh Alexander - supposedly he was one of the most intelligent men in Britain at the time - a real brain box. After doing Ozymandias the most intelligent man in the world wonder if it was a bit of a come down? 😀

Wasn't sure if these had been posted..PBS put up several short cast videos with Matthew Rhys, Anna Maxwell Martin and Matthew Goode.

It's amazing how charming he is and how well he "gets it" as to how and what a viewer might be thinking and feeling about a story.

Rats! It's not playable in the UK. I'll just have to imagine it.
