Gael's last name
Is his last name "Garcia Bernal" or "Bernal"? Do I file him under G or B?

It's Garcia. Spanish speakers use the penultimate name; Portuguese the last name.
Keep silent unless what you are going to say is more important than silence.
But he's Mexican, right?
"Engineroom! Where the hell is my drink?"
Yes and he's a Spanish speaker ...
Keep silent unless what you are going to say is more important than silence.
His name+ 2 last names is Gael García Bernal.
Spanish speaking countries: 23 of them, follow Spain's tradition: First is the Name: Gael. Then, the fathers first last name (apellido): García. After, the second last name, the mother's first last name: Bernal.
Therefore, to file him will be: García Bernal, Gael.

Thank you very much for clearing that up for me :)
"Engineroom! Where the hell is my drink?"
i really like that tradition and i like how both the father and the mother's surnames are said. i feel like in the US, the mother is practically wiped out in the child's identity.
shareSame in most Western European countries.
My mother's family is from Spain. Her first name is the same as her mother. It is quite common for daughters first name to be named after their mother. My sister has the same middle name as my mother.
Opposite in the USA. Sons are named after their father.
