Awhile back, he wrote Swingers and was a 2nd billed actor....but now he's being such franchise big budget movies like Cowboys and Aliens (not to mention both Ironman movies). Even the jump to Elf seemed like a pretty big jump...but from that to Ironman and Cowboys and Aliens... wow. It's not like he went to film school or came up the ranks (cinemetographer, dp, etc like other filmmakers)...
