Well...I'm not a man, but I know Hugh has rumors about his sexuality. People think he's bisexual although nothing is confirmed, there are only gossip sites who talked about this, and even a tabloid rumor says that he made out with Michael Cunningham.

Of course, those rumors died long ago and nothing was legit, even Hugh denied everything, therefore, it's difficult to say something about his sexuality, indeed we don't have any serious proof about his sexual orientation because :

1) He's a very private person.
2) The Paparazzi never follow him considering his very low popularity.
3) Is an underrated actor, and for that reason, he doesn't have a lot of interviews so the probability of somebody ask private questions is low.

By the way...what do you mean with "he's pretty well known in the gay community"? What things are you heard?

Paparazzis follow him quite often, it's mostly to take pictures of him with Claire and their son but they do take pictures of him out and about alone too.
What he said about this rumors is he simply cannot control what people say about him, but he wouldn't like to talk much about it as it never happened and the more you talk about it the more the rumor spreads (that is true).
His gay following is because in addition to having an ethereal look he also has played a bisexual and gay character, in The Big C he's a gay man dying from cancer and in Savage Grace he's a bisexual man that sleeps with the mother and her son (Julianne Moore/Eddie R.).
ETA; he also played a closet gay guy in a play with Ben Whishaw (The Pride).
The following intensified after Hannibal with the homoerotic scenes although his character is straight. He addressed it in a couple of interviews, he said he doesn't mind his characters' sexuality and is grateful for the following.
That is all. As for relationships he had a long term girlfriend, they broke up (then he was rumored to have dated Anne Hathaway back in the day) then engaged and married to Claire Danes, they've been together for 10 years now and have a son.
