He's a national treasure. I enjoy watching interviews with him from almost 50 years ago. Nowadays he would probably be considered too erudite and witty and not cynical and crass enough for modern sensibilities.

I am watching him interview Jerry Lewis from 1973.

His interview with Dick Van Dyke around '74 is really good, in which Van Dyke speaks very frankly about his problems with alcoholism

I really enjoyed Cavett although I was also a bit young to appreciate him on a smarter level.
But even then, he seemd like he was a step ahead of other shows that were similar, and he had a lot of very cool guests who seemed happy to be on his show that may not have appeared otherwise.
