There's only a 2 year difference in their ages when they died but I feel like Bowie's is considered more tragic. Like in articles I've read called Bowie's death a tragedy but none really about Johnny Cash's. Either way I wish both could've lived at least 10 more years.

He was a charming fellow who was so friendly to everyone.
I didn't really know the man personally though his humor here suggests he stared death in the face going one foot forward and with a lot of character.
No one is truly dead when their memory lives on.

shareThis is a very subjective perception. I think Bowie's passing was more surprising, which might seem more tragic, and Johnny was obviously in poor health late in his career. And while I imagine there are many people such as yourself who admire both men, on it's face it would seem that their fan bases are very dissimilar. I won't even try to hazard a guess as to which artist had a bigger impact on the culture at large, but it might make for an interesting debate. Heck, an argument might be made for Freddie Mercury being bigger than either of them, although that's not one I would make.

shareNo argument from me, but Johnny's rock solid persona and unwillingness to alter his approach when I'm sure there was some pressure to do so, makes him rather satisfying as someone to admire. Even the late stuff produced by whoever that guy is, sounds more like great suggestions for him to cover in his inimitable fashion, rather than trying to modernize his sound.
But when it comes down to it, trying to put JC and DB in the same conversation is like comparing Abe Lincoln to Lou Reed.
Not comparing the quality of their music, comparing the impact they had on the music world. Both put out a shitload of music and are considered very influential to the younger generation of musicians. I guess it’s just fun to make unusal comparisons.

Cash, on the other hand, never seemed young. Even when he was actually young and new on the scene, he seemed world-weary and old before his time. There was an age difference of fifteen years between then, but Cash seemed about fifty years older.
