He always has to opt for making things so convoluted for no reason. The original Cloverfield was great precisely due to it's simplicity. The other movies fall into the mystery for the sake of mystery crap and don't connect to the original in any meaningful way.
shareTo be fair, both movies started off as entirely separate works that were unrelated to Cloverfield. The producers just slapped the name on them in post with the "third movie" got some extra scenes to at least try to link it to the Cloverfield monster.
