Sorry, not a JJ Abrams fan. HE just needs to stop making movies.

He's just not cut out for it. Just saw the star wars movie. Not a "bad" movie per se, but definitely NOT a true Star wars movie. Was it entertaining? Yes, for the most part. The problem is the directing style. The original trilogy had an ebb and flow pacing that when taken as a whole, flowed very nicely. Even the prequels did a better job of this than Abrams' movie did. And that ebb and flow are bracketed by nuance, something that Abrams has NEVER been able to do properly.

The other thing, as he did with the Trek movies, is that this movie reflects a lot of HIS taken on the franchise. And that is the problem. Sometimes, in very rare circumstances, the franchise is bigger than the director/producer, the director/producer most conform to the franchise not the other way around. Most of the time, this is not the case, but with Trek and SW it is. It's like what Abrams did with the Enterprise sizing. He turned a tiny ship with barely 200 people on it into something massive with thousands on it. There was a reason the ship was small in the original movies, and it's what made some of it interesting. It's abilities, capacities etc were limited. The crew had only what was there to work with, that's it. And then there is the issue of trek being able to get around the galaxy in mere minutes when in fact, the distances they traveled should have taken days, if not weeks. It's little nuance details like this that ruin movies. And as I have said, Abrams just cannot do nuance at all. He's another Michael Bay, all Show no Go.

Don't hate. With the new technological advances he is the best at these films. Just watch and observe if you know Anythin in filming.

He IS good with the technology, that I'll give you. But that doesnt mean he's a good director. At best, he is better suited for Dir. Photog, or EFX supervisor, or something along those lines.

But that's just for movies. Music videos, commercials, shorter things he's ok for. He just hasn't made the leap into what I call a top tier director. A top tier director knows and can almost automatically weave a flow into the movie. They know when to go fast, when to slow down, and when to let a slow silent nuance take center stage. JJ Abrams does not. Not yet at least. He's getting far too many projects he's not ready for.

It's like comparing an ALL American college football player versus an NFL Pro-bowl MVP. There's no contest there. Even the average NFL player will school that college player at first.

He just needs more experience with smaller projects or be the 2nd chair on these bigger projects where he can learn from a master director. Let me ask you this, who makes better movies, James Cameron or JJ Abrams? Most would say Cameron, why? Because well, the results for one thing. But more importantly, Cameron really delves into the subject matter like he did for Titanic. He actually researched it. He knew where he absolutely had to stick to canon and where he could take artistic license. Abrams does not. Look what he did to the Trek universe. He royally pissed off a LOT of long time Trek fans, alienating some of the very people he was supposedly making the movie for. (and when I say making for them, I mean their demographic, fan base, etc.)

So, right now he needs to stop making movies, go back and reevaluate his own past work to see where he made his mistakes, learn from them, and start doing things right.
