Drea Blames 'Joey' for ruining her career

Drea De Matteo Is Out Of Work

Drea De Matteo is bummed out that she's out of work, and she blames Joey. Not the person…the show.

She says taking the part as Joey from Friend's sister has ruined her career and she hasn't been able to work every since. We don't blame her for pointing the finger. She was amazing in her role on Sopranos, and we all knew Joey would fail! Those spin offs almost never work out.

POISONOUS SHOW

May 26, 2008 -- DREA de Matteo believes her stint on the canceled NBC series "Joey" has Hollywood treating her like the plague. The talented actress, who won an Emmy for her role as spicy moll Adriana on "The Sopranos," was overheard in the West Village saying she wants to get back to work after her stint on the unwatchable show. "She was saying 'Joey' completely ruined her career," said our spy. "She called it horrible and said she hasn't been able to really work since then. She said she's really been out of the business and is trying to get back in." Her agent didn't return a call for comment.

DREA DE MATTEO - DE MATTEO BLAMES JOEY FOR CAREER HIATUS

Actress DREA DE MATTEO reportedly blames her role in cancelled U.S. sitcom JOEY for ruining her career.

The former The Sopranos star signed up to play Matt Le Blanc's sister on the NBC show, after he continued his famed Friends character for the spin-off following the conclusion of the original hit series in 2004.
But the programme failed to win over Friends fans, and was scrapped by the U.S. network in 2006 after only two series.
And, according to New York gossip column Page Six, De Matteo regrets accepting a part in the doomed series - admitting she has been out of work since the show ended.

A source tells the publication, "She was saying Joey completely ruined her career. She called it horrible and said she hasn't been able to really work since then.

"She said she's really been out of the business and is trying to get back in."

Though I watched the horribly dreadful "Joey" because she was in it, ain't it the truth?

What do you think?

I think these gossip sites are exaggerating. She couldn't work most of last year because she was pregnant and she's been announced as a cast member on a new series debuting on FX in the fall.

Yes 'Joey' was an awful show but thats not why she hasn't worked much since. No thats because she's a rubbish actress.

reply

Well I wouldn't say she was rubbish by any means. Crappy actors don't win Emmy's, you know. I do question her versatility though as I've only ever seen her in The Soprano's and Joey.

I think they're all exaggerating. Drea is awesome. If I remember correctly, the whole Joey thing even though it didn't work out well, was a new life experience for her. I remember reading an article where she talked about how risky the move to LA was, and how her parents, dogs, etc all piled up in an RV for the move cross country. Even though Joey wasn't a success i'm sure the life experience Drea got from taking the challenge of moving to the other side of the country, working in a structured studio, etc were worth it.
I wouldn't agree with the typecast thing Drea can play more than just a mobster's girlfriend. She was great in Broken English, and in an interview for it said she really wanted to do it because it was something that allowed her to be more normal.

Rubbish is correct, Eve

Let's just say she's an example of someone who wins a major award (an Emmy??!!!) and then sees her career go downhill from there. Happens with people who win Oscars, too. File that under "Lucky To Have Won It In the First Place," AKA "Big Freaking Fluke."

Drea once said that her "New York accent" was finally paying off with "The Sopranos." And I'm sure the cable and DVD residuals are really good, too. But, as for life after "The Sopranos," there aren't a lot of roles for actresses with heavy New York accents. That show was a major cosmic break for a slew of actors who (with the exception of Lorraine Bracco) had been kicking around in bit parts for YEARS.

I agree that Drea's versatility is questionable. If she was serious about acting, she'd try doing Off-Broadway in the hopes of redefining herself and working on her craft, the way serious actors have always done. Taking roles that typecast her is not the answer.

In real life, her accent isn't that strong. It's obvious she laid it on thick on Sopranos. She did a credible Southern accent in Walker Payne and was totally cast against type but the film still hasn't come out. And she couldn't have done much Off-Broadway or anything else in the last year because of the baby. She's supposed to start shooting a new TV series for FX anytime now so she's not really "out of work."

reply

The fact that she's younger than Matt LeBlanc even though her character is supposed to be older probably didn't help either.

I don't know the facts on this but did she quit the Sopranos to do Joey?
