Her 'Lily' Specials in the Early 70s

Does anyone know where I can find any of her 70s specials?! VHS, DVD, MPEG files - I'll take anything! I read that there was a controversial scene at the end of one where she shared an interracial kiss with Mr. Pryor and it was never aired again. Would love to see this stuff!

Thank you.

Hey Kryssi. Lily's 1970's specials are VERY VERY HARD to find. She did 2 for CBS in 1973 & 2 for ABC in 1974/75. Winning 4 Emmy's for her work on them. They are not available at all with the exception of "THE LILY TOMLIN SPECIAL: VOL 1" which is her 2nd CBS special. This was released on VHS in the 80's. You see it on ebay from time to time so check there first. This is the show which has Lily thanking her guests at the end and giving them each a kiss. CBS did not want Lily to kiss Richard Pryor for racial reasons. ( can you imagine?? ) Lily ignored their instructions and gave him a peck along with the rest. At the time she apparently caused a stir. Today that is nothing.

On Lily's first CBS special there was a sketch with Lily as the Tasteful Lady and Richard Pryor the Wino and they get stuck in an elevator together and he talks and asks her "you ever kiss a black man?" and she gets all huffy and offended. It is a HILARIOUS skit. They didn't actually kiss however.

I do have all 4 specials on VHS and will transfer them to DVD soon. If I could right now I'd make you copies but it is a work in process for for me at the moment. When I'm ready I'll let you know HOWEVER I'm not sure about sharing these at all, not because I don't want to help you out, but because of legal reasons. There is GOOD NEWS though. I hear Lily is planning on putting all the specials on DVD. Let's hope it's soon. Cross your fingers.

Ahhh, thank you thank you THANK YOU for sorting out all that info for me! I just hate being the pesky "newb", hehe...

Wow, I can't believe the network would get so worked up over a PECK! Disgusting. At least he was male, I mean look how far we've advanced (right into homophobia, that is).

Well I personally will continue to be on the look-out for any/all of these; however, if you ever change your mind about sharing, my email is [email protected] (but I don't blame you for being reluctant).

You're very welcome. I've been a Lily fan for a long time now and I'm proud to have researched her career and awards. It's an amazing career Lily has had.

It's more a matter of time for getting any copies made but when I do I promise I'll get in contact with you. Thanks for sharing your email. AND be sure to always check ebay. I've found lots of good rare collectable Lily memorablia on there. Although I don't want any bidding competition ( wink wink ), I also like seeing other fans : )

I forgot to mention to look on youtube. There is a HILARIOUS clip of Mrs. Beasley doing a commercial for GRR laundry detergent. It's from Lily's first CBS special in 1973. I think there's a couple other TV special clips on there too.

Sorry I keep forgetting these things on my previous posts. I would suggest going to Lily's website lilytomlin.com and post a comment on her guestbook and tell her your a new/younger fan and would like to see her 1970s tv specials out on dvd. That way your request goes right to the horses mouth : )

Yes, I've seen that clip - LOOOVED. IT.!!! Her line delivery is much better on there than the album version (especially "...to HELL with you"), and she looks amazing as well.

Okay great, thank you. Wonder if she really DOES read all those comments...? Not that that will stop me!

Oh and one more thing - because you seem to be the only one I can keep successfully bugging about Lily stuff - I was reading up on this "Lily Tomlin" documentary from the mid 80s about her and Jane's collaboration (etc.) for The Search. Was this originally aired on a TV network and never released in some format?? Because the more I see and read of Jane, the more fascinated I become. It's no wonder all that Lily sees in her. And they're so fun together, what little I've seen anyway (like in the DVD extras for "The Search...")!

Yes she really DOES read those guest book postings. I've recieved personal replies from Lily herself so please don't be shy. Write to her and let her know you'd like to see her tv specials on dvd.

LILY TOMLIN (1986) was the documentary about the making of the SEARCH/SIGNS. It was on PBS tv and from what I can tell had a VERY limited run in some theaters in 1987. Lily originally sued to prevent it's being released at all. She felt it showed too much actual stage footage from the show and would hurt sales for a future video release of the show. I think she also worried about the film invading her privacy too much also. It has only been seen on PBS a couple of times. I think that would have been a GREAT special feature on the SEARCH dvd. But the special features on the dvd are still wonderful.

Write Lily!!
