It's well known that bald men are more virile. Hollywood has always tried to repress male virility, see the frontal nudity scandals for more information.
P.S. The way Statham gets away with it is his English accent. It confuses the Hollywood moguls, who are unable to concentrate on two things at the same time.

Jason had European investors backing him. Those films lifted him.
Americans productions had him pegged as a "bald bad guy" like in Cellular.
Euro trash fans lifted his stardom.
Billy Zane never had those backers. Also Billy Zane is not a nice guy. I have met him severel times.
Why do people who meet celebrities think they are qualified to make a judgement on wether they are nice or not? and then feel the need to publish it on the internet ?
I'd say say the treatment a celebrity hounding stalker received may not be typical .
He was never known for his looks, he was known for being very badass and very funny.
