I have scoured the internet in search of info on this very topic, because I too thought their chemistry was way too hot to be make-believe. As it turns out, they did date for about 4 months; seems like from January to May in 1992 while filming the pilot. Joe says he was "madly in love" and "crazy" for Jane. Jane said they were at two different places in life, referring to the 11 year age difference, so she broke that off and got with James Keach, one of the shows directors whom she later married.

They were rumored to have tension throughout the show: stuff like jealousy and competition, sometimes they barely spoke. They denied it mostly, but even the show's writer said it in her book, so I believe it. Luckily, they are the best of friends now. And furthermore, in a roundabout way, Joe admits he had trouble getting over Jane. The writer also talked about this, even saying how he went above and beyond the script, even doing stuff that was taboo for family TV in some of their love scenes, like the time he sucked her toes in the Mother Daughter episode. The writers even joked about how he used those scenes as an opportunity to communicate to Jane that he still wanted to "F..." and he would subsequently turn her on which was just another way to torture her, since she was married.

When you go research this couple, it is quite salacious--some of the details. This is just a synopsis.

It definitely seems that way. I began watching reruns of DQ recently. The chemistry between them is unbelievable. I like how real it seems. It is easy to see that they are completely comfortable with each other...although, who wouldn't be comfortable with him! Personally, I don't like shows that are so conservative that they won't show what it is really like between two people in love. I'm not saying they have to be overly graphic, especially for a family show, but they can show real "love" between two people.

Wow!! Where did you dig up this info?? I don't remember Sully sucking Dr Mike's toes but I will definitely have to go back and look.
They really did (and still do!) have amazing chemistry.
Anytime they are interviewed together they are all over each other and kiss on the mouths.

I found archived interviews on Joe's Dr. Quinn site where he admitted a little about what he felt for her. Jane talked about how the love scenes were "real" in a sense because of their history, which is quite evident just by looking at the show. One of the writers, Sara Davidson, wrote a book entitled Cowboy: a novel, where she talked about what she and another writer observed about Jane and Joe. I just had to laugh at how bluntly they described Joe trying to RE-seduce Jane in those scenes. It's amazing that he did stuff like this with her husband being one of the shows directors. I do think that he eased up whenever James Keach directed an episode, which was only every 5th episode or so. I loved how she said that when they acted in love scenes, there was no one else in the room and nothing else mattered...they zoned everything out and it was just them---That's crazy cause that's exactly what it looks like to me. It looks like they quite the script for a minute and switch from Sully & Michaela to Jane & Joe that used to date. I would be like, "Now, are they just THAT good at acting or was there something going on between them?!?"--and that was before I knew they dated. LOL...They are still fascinating to me, cause I swear they still have love for each other.

I thought they had great chemistry too. But he said he met the love of his life after her an is still married to his wife now of almost 20 years with 4 children (3 of them teens and one almost grown). I personally like Sully a lot better than Dr. Mike, who I found in that character incredibly annoying and preachy. I don't know if Jane Seymour is anything like her television persona, but Sully seems like Joe Lando in real life...life and honest.
