is it fair to admit that this guy is just a hack by this point?

He pretty much just came up with one idea that worked after having just seen a couple Tarantino flicks. After that film became a hit, he remade it with a bigger budget called Snatch. Since then however, he's pretty much made nothing worth watching.

At best, he's done perfectly adequate follow-ups to Lock, Stock and Snatch with films like RocknRolla and The Gentleman. Everything else though, has ranged from either mediocre, cookie-cutter studio trash (King Arthur, the Sherlock Holmes films, The Man from Uncle) to straight up garbage (Swept Away, Revolver, Aladdin).

People always talk about how directors like M. Night Shyamalan and George Lucas only just got lucky early on in their careers, but I think that description fits Guy Ritchie more than anyone else. The guy (no pun intended) literally can't make any movies that work without just straight up remaking his first film. I can't think of a more accurate description of a hack than that...

Any thoughts?

The first Sherlock Holmes film and The Man from U.N.C.L.E. got ok reviews. Both get quite a lot of love online from movie fans.

Those were just mediocre, cookie-cutter remakes of classic properties. Those are the kinda flicks you watch once and immediately forget about. Even if they were great films, it still doesn't make up for the sheer number of crap he's made since Snatch.

Lock, Stock - Great film
Snatch - Great film
Swept Away- Awful
Revolver - Average
RocknRolla - Solid film
Sherlock Holmes - Solid film
Sherlock Holmes 2 - Solid film
The Man from Uncle - Solid film
King Arthur - Just okay

The Gentlemen - Very good

He seems to be doing well for me.

I liked Lock Stock, Snatch and The Gentlemen. EVERYTHING ELSE is crap. I don't know why people rave about Sherlock Holmes, man that was some of the most boring 'action adventure' shit I've ever seen.

Guy Ritchie is basically a one-trick pony, obviously tried to ape Tarantino to some success. When he ventures outside his comfort zone of the Snatch type film, I think he fails every single time. That's probably why I enjoyed The Gentlemen because obviously it was a return to Snatch model, and also kind of backs up my point that he's a one-trick pony.

Guy Ritchie is Bush (the band) to Quentin Tarantino's Nirvana.

Clarkson (as in Jeremy) doesn't like him. because GR apparently bought a pub that Jezza used to go to, and after buying it, closed it down. actually I'll re phrase, 10 years ago he didn't like him. I've got no idea what his opinion is of him at the moment..
