Bethyl and Caryl.

Can anyone explain to me what the big fuss is about? As I understand it some fans would like Daryl and Carol to wind up together while others would like Daryl and Beth to be a couple.

There seems to be some type of online feud, especially after the SDCC. From what I was able to gather online (I stink at searching) both sides call themselves shippers and each believe the other is rude. I read comments from both sides that were very ugly, many insulted the actual TWD actors and writers.
Norman was called a pedo. Each side claims to state the relationship they want is "canon or alomst canon." I had to look up the term canon:

Canon (in the context of fandom) is a source, or sources, considered authoritative by the fannish community. In other words, canon is what fans agree "actually" happened in a film, television show, novel, comic book, or concert tour. The term derives from the theological concept of canon, the foundational texts of a religion.
Specific sources considered canon may vary even within a specific fandom.

How could anything be considered canon if it didn't happen yet?

I am a huge fan of TWD and in my mind Daryl is more is a brother to both Carol and Beth. If they do write in a relationship I wouldn't care as long as they do it well, I do think the Glenn and Maggie relationship changed Glenn for the worse but I still love him. Carol is not too old for Daryl, they are the same age and she's pretty. Beth is too young for Daryl in MY opinion but she is not a child and she is of legal age. Also, the ZA tends to age a person beyond their physical years, and it's not like there is an abundance of soul mates for either of them to find.

To me Daryl & Carol have braved so many storms together and he admires her for being the type of mother he never had, they are like brother and sister and very close. I think he sees Beth as a younger sister and wants to keep her protected. I thought he had more in common with Michonne, but I also see sparks between her and Rick. It could go any way but it's not important to me in terms of the series.

Why do people get their knickers in a twist over TV characters? It's not real and the actors kissing or hugging at SDCC do not mean they are going to be together in the series. Even the Season 5 preview didn't reveal anything regarding the Daryl character having a releationship. It's just so odd that people are at each other's throats over a TV show, it's not real. Norman is not dating Emily Kinney or Melissa McBride in real life, not that it should matter anyway.

Why does it seem like people are losing their minds? It's one thing to hope characters will hook up but when you begin insulting the actore and writers it's another. It's not real people. And from what I read it's hate and nasty words coming from both sides.

It's not just TWD. This happens in every fandom, in every show I'm watching right now there are shipper wars. Some are triangles, some are just about wanting a couple to become canon.

Some people enjoy shipping and are respectful, while other go overboard. Unfortunately the rabid ones ruin it for everybody. Personally I get so turned off by all this stuff that sometimes I end up avoiding the board altogether.

BTW, for the record I agree with everything you said about Daryl, Carol and Beth. I don't really "ship" Daryl with anyone right now, but in general I prefer his relationship with Carol. It makes more sense to me, they actually developed their relationship in a natural way, I think they are awesome friends and I love it when Carol "flirts" with him (I mean that in a friendly way). I can see them having a "friends with benefits" relationship, not sure if they could have a serious lasting romance. As for Beth, I just don't see it, but then again I don't really like Beth at all so I might be biased.

I also feel the same about Michonne. I think she and Daryl could hit it off, I can see them together, but - like you - I'm kinda liking the vibe between her and Rick too.

Raisin cookies that look like chocolate chip cookies are the reason I have trust issues.

I don't really care if there's a Caryl or Bethyl, as long as they do it right. While Emily the actress is 28 years old, I think Beth the character is a little too young for Daryl. But, she's probably more emotionally mature than him anyways, so whatever.

With Carol I just get the sibling-vibe. They were kind of going there back in season 2, but after that never happened I was shipping Carol with Axel, and then Merle for a hot second ("you're a late bloomer" -- "maybe you are too")!

Michonne is too similar to Daryl IMO. Their contribution to a relationship would be the same, and the relationship would lack a lot of things. I think Rick is a much better fit for Michonne, and I'm shipping someone more "normal" with Daryl, like Maggie, Sasha or Rosita. Or a completely new character, who knows what train car B holds?

I would also be perfectly fine with Daryl being single for a few more seasons. Better that than the writers rushing it!!!

maria79, I loved the scene where Axel flirted with Carol! I thought it was so sweet because I bet no one had paid her a compliment in ages considering she was married to Ed. She seemed so happy and I immediately thought their interaction seemed cute, but of course we know how that ended. I realize I am reaching but I could also see her with Ty, he seems to understand her actions to protect the "family" after what happened with Lizzie. I doubt that will happen though, just me wishing.

I can't see Daryl with Maggie, not after her and Glenn. I haven't seen much interaction between Daryl and Sasha or Rosita so I don't have an opinion yet, but seeing as Rosita is Abraham's girl I don't see that happening. I think I'm with you and hope train car B holds someone interesting, but if not it's no big deal.

They don't have to all have a romance going on, I think too many may interfere with the story lines. Most of all I certainly feel no need to have a fit if I don't get the story I want from the writers. It's just TV and I can turn it off or change the channel if I no longer like the show. Easy peasy.

Thank you woodstock70 for your thoughtful response, I was not aware of "shipping" and that this type of behavior is common among fanatics of TV shows. It definitely seems like it could be all in good fun but that the things I read were deviation from what is normal. It's a shame a few bad apples can spoil it for the whole bunch, I don't blame you for avoiding sites that allow such vitriol to be spewed.

I too love it when Carol flirts with Daryl but it never seems serious to me. She always appears to be kidding with him and he responds by brushing it off with a smile and blush. They seem to tease each other in a friendly manner, I think it's adorable and gives some lightness to both characters. I cannot see the friends with benefits idea, in my mind it would ruin the relationship if either character found a real love interest in the future. It's just such a small population that there is no way that would not be awkward, the way Daryl protects Carol I would picture him finding no man worthy.

I honestly do not have a strong opinion of Beth at this point, but it seems like the writers are going to fill out her character in Season 5. To me she has just always been in the back ground as the suicidal, weepy, baby-sitting teen who sings sometimes. The Daryl and Beth centric episodes from Season 4 did little to change my opinion as she still came across as a maiden in distress on a big quest for her first alcoholic beverage. If anything it only made her appear more child like although I do think she did a great job of snapping Daryl out of his funk. It looks like in Season 5 they are going to amp up her character which is great, the actress is good and deserves more of a story line. I am curious to see if they go that way romantically. To me it just seems as though she found comfort with a guy she sees as an older brother and protector, and he is just surprised (like with Carol) that someone actually cares about his life.

I did think Daryl and Michonne would be the perfect butt kicking pair and they do seem to like each other, but I can also see her paired with Rick. She seems to adore Carl and care deeply about keeping him safe and I think Rick sees that about Michonne. Their interactions are so sweet and they seem like a little family. He lost his wife and she lost her husband and son. It's obvious and simple writing if they do have Rick and Michonne eventually become romantic, but I like it.

We will see how it plays out and I am excited either way! I honestly don't care if there are no romantic pairings either as long as the scripts are good. I am just excited for the show and wish people would calm down and realize it's NOT REAL!

Love their bromance, as well as Norman and Andy being BFF's on set too!

Love the Rick and Daryl bromance! I also do not understand the hate between fans of a Daryl and Carol or Daryl and Beth romance. It's just a TV show. I would be happy either way as long as the story line was good.
