Having trouble taking him seriously as a redneck

I dig Norman Reedus, and I think he's a more than capable actor, but even though I like him, and like Daryl, I have a really hard time buying the redneck act.

You can douse yourself in sweat, dirt and guts, you can drawl all you want, it won't do you much good if you can't match up the rest of you.

Daryl talks backwoods, Norman moves city. Every time he walks more than three steps, or has to make any series of complex motion, every inch of his body screams metro.

Daryl supposedly spent his life hunting, tracking, and navigating the woods.
Norman pretty obviously spent his life navigating the urban bar scene and every move he makes advertises it.

It's petty, but it bugs me.

I think I kinda get what you mean, but I really don't see it. Quite the opposite, actually! Norman can wear a suit on the red carpet and wear it damn well, but he always looks like a wolf pretending to be a golden retriever, or something.

I dont think Daryl moves in any of the same ways Norman does. Daryl is reserved and quiet with his body mechanics. Norman is a great big lab puppy with ADHD and big hand gestures and extroverted happy energy.

I've never seen Daryl use his hand to talk animatedly about the best way to make a walker ear necklace, or toss his hair back, or stomp the prison cat walk, like how Norman did the fashion catwalk.

Only shared physical habit is chewing on his fingers and thats an insecurity thing that usurps metro or redneck.

I've lived in rural Appalachia for 2 decades now, and he plays the redneck thing pretty damn legit. He does have the funny walk, but that isnt metro (in fact it hurt his modeling career) its just that he has hyperflexibility (double jointed) in his arms & legs.

I pretty much grew up redneck and he has it down pat.

And that isn't really coming from a fan. Daryl is the only role I have ever seen him play that I didn't want to reach through the TV and throttle him. I still can't stand him in other roles.

Mishelly05,

masc/fem do not a redneck make. We have flaming gay boys that are still rednecks, and the whole dialect/mannerism of those from the VA side of Appalachia, is incredibly fem. Yankees often think the guys are gay, because of how they move & talk....even while chewing their tobacco & talking NASCAR. (look at Johnny Knoxville).

Side note, as of now, who is to say Daryl isnt gay or bi? Never seen him even remotely interested in chicks, even when Carol is throwing it at him. He's so incredible stunted/repressed, in so many ways.

Regardless, I do see what you guys are talking about, but I also see it every freakin day, right here in glorious Appalachia. There is as much diversity among rednecks, as any other sub culture.

I live in South Carolina's redneck capital. My husband is a trucker & redneck. Trust me. I used to be over 250 plus truckers. Most as red as they come.
He sells it 150%!
No doubt.
