I agree. He is very, very limited and caught a VERY big break being on TWD. Nobody really knew who he was until then...Boondock Saints was only a cult success. I had never heard of him until TWD, actually.

He is a scruff bag, why everyone raves about him I do not know, and he is not sexy either.

I can't speak to his acting ability, because I've never seen him in anything. I refuse to watch The Walking Dead, because I don't watch anything even remotely horror-related. But I see photos of him all the time from that show, and he looks like hell. Sweaty, greasy, unkempt, yet people rave about him. Is it because he looks good in comparison to the undead mummies? I don't get it.

At the beginning we're shown him being an angry slightly racist 'doesn't really think' hillbilly kind of character but TWD brilliantly brought out his beautiful caring deep sensitive side as the seasons went on making him a No 1 fan favourite - the way he wanted to find Sophia - the way he saved other characters - the way he manages to get out of a kill - the way how he let his group become his family and will do anything to protect them.

I actually started watching TWD because Norman Reedus was in it. Loved him in The Boondock Saints movies hope he can be in the third! I like the movies he's in - I think he brings 'character' to his characters.

Also I can't watch horror or gory related stuff myself but TWD is different - maybe I've become desensitised to the damage zombies can do. It's actually not that bad. Maybe it's because the chances of being eaten by a zombie is close to zero in my lifetime or so I hope!

But to anyone who can't or won't watch anything gory/horror give TWD a try it's more about survival than anything

In his defense, most of what you see now on The Walking Dead relating to how the character Daryl looks is due to them wanting the characters to look more realistic. If the characters had continued to look clean/shaven, well dressed and otherwise NOT looking like they were just trying to survive in a world that has broken down due to the zombie apocalypse it would be completely unbelievable. So, they started having the men grow their hair long and allow them to look unwashed, unshaven and unkempt.

Unfortunately, Norman Reedus seems to have chosen to keep up that look in his personal life off screen as well since I have seen photos of both him and Andrew Lincoln unshaven and with long, greasy hair during the off season. Even if they choose to keep the facial hair and long hair during the off season they could at least keep it clean when they are not filming.

I agree though that Reedus is looking really bad lately. It is more than just the things he is doing to stay in character. His face has been looking bloated and he just doesn't look well lately. Maybe he is also having some health issues contributing to the way he looks.
