Cricket is not necessarily a bad name.
Hey, she could have named to newborn daughter Bubbles or even worse, HORTENSE!

shareTerrible and cruel thing to do to your child. Not cute or funny at all
shareI have had two guitar students named Cricket and it does not seem weird to me.
shareWell, you're an adult. Kids have a very different idea of what weird is, and not to mention, limited empathy.

I went to middle and high school in the early to mid 80s with a girl named Cricket. Of course it in her case it was a nickname. But it was what everyone, including the teachers, called her. We never thought it was a weird name and she wasn't treated cruelly because of it. I didn't know her in elementary school, so I don't know how other kids treated her then, but it seems if she had been treated cruelly by kids because of her name she would have stopped using the nickname and gone back to her given name.

She could take the "Mrs. Bucket" route:
"Miss .. Cricket? Cricket!"
(condescending ahem, with a faux-British accent) "It's cri-quais (French pronunciation, IPA: [krɪkeɪ]), you idiot!

i also grew up in the 80s, and one of the most popular girls in my middle school was literally nicknamed 'bug' (her parents called her and her twin brother grasshopper and ladybug as infants and they grew up as 'hop' and 'bug'). it was cute.
in my experience, 'weird' names make you seem more interesting/exciting. my nickname was 'minnie' in the 80s (my korean name is min-hee, i have another american name that i go by now but we lived with my aunt who had the same name) and everyone loved it because of minnie mouse. i also loved minnie mouse so when people called me that i was super flattered. haha.
