I am about 6 years behind, granted, but I just saw the ep with Barnys brother, and there was a flashback to when they were kids. MM was their mother, but I see no reference to this anywhere.

because she doesn't play his mother. Frances Conroy does

She was the voice of Barney's mother before they cast Frances Conroy. She wasn't seen, only heard.
